A Message from the PMG

February 2008

How about this? We just recorded our third straight quarter of 96 percent on-time overnight delivery performance. And one of those quarters was our busy holiday mailing season! We’re continuing to set service records.

This is the first time we ever achieved a 96 percent for overnight First-Class mail in the first quarter. It was the same for 2-day and 3-day mail - they also reached first-quarter highs.

Customers are noticing. A new Roper poll showed that the American people give the Postal Service a higher satisfaction rating than any other federal department or agency. We've led in that ranking for the last 10 years. About half of those polled had a "highly favorable" opinion of the Postal Service — well above the ratings for the other agencies.

Can we top that? The Postal Service is also the most trusted federal agency. In fact, as far as trust is concerned, we're in the top 10 — in the public or the private sector. We care and we show that to our customers every day in everything we do.

One of the ways we show customers we care is with products that make the mail easier to use — and bring them closer to the people they care about. The latest one is the new, larger Flat Rate Priority Mail box. That gives mailers more options and more reasons to choose our shipping services. There's even a special version of the box for the military — with a two-dollar discount for APO and FPO addresses. We know how important it is for friends and families to bring a touch of home to their loved ones serving abroad with our armed forces. We’re happy to help.

Over the last several months, just about every business has been experiencing the problems of a difficult economy. It’s the same with us. Unfortunately, two key sectors of the economy — finance and housing — suffered a downturn in the first quarter, and they’re both heavy users of the mail. That contributed to a volume decline of about 3 percent. We’re working to offset the disappointing revenue results with cost reductions and new strategies for growth.

As you can see, we’re having a busy year. There’s a lot happening. There’s a lot more to come. And I’ll be telling you all about it right here at Keeping Posted.
